Jochen Plogsties bases his paintings on icons of art history, newspaper covers, photographs and anything else that inspires him. He plays with the viewer's visual habits and masters the compositional principles of the old masters.
We visited the artist in person in his studio and let him have his say.
What significance does the ornament with fivefold symmetry have as a central element of his work? Plogstie's works, which are often recognisable as patterns, are not only aesthetically impressive, but also reflect fundamental principles of order in our world. He combines precise techniques with a creative process, resulting in an interplay of structure and freedom that is clearly perceptible in his works.
Plogsties talks about the challenges and decisions that characterise each of his compositions. It is about the question of how much should remain recognisable, how forms and patterns affect the viewer and how they radiate out into the world. His works invite us to look at familiar motifs from a new perspective and discover the subtleties of the composition.
The video not only provides insights into his technique, but also shows the passion with which he combines traditional and modern elements.
