About Christoph Bouet
Christoph Bouet's works captivate with their remarkable material presence: oil paint is applied in layers several centimetres thick on the canvas of his large-format paintings. Bouet often spreads thick lumps of paint - sometimes directly from the tube - onto the surface, building his compositions layer by layer. A single painting can require up to 20 tubes of paint, resulting in an impressive and singular visual experience. The textured masses of colour rise like waves in a tumultuous sea, creating a dynamic interplay of form and movement. Depending on the viewer's distance and perspective, the paintings reveal different visual dimensions: up close, the abstract reliefs of thickly applied paint are mesmerising, while from a distance, the pictorial subjects emerge distinctly from the seemingly chaotic interplay of colour. This highly structured surface creates an illusion of movement and energy.
Nature and landscapes are central themes in Bouet's work, often inspired by real locations across Europe. Familiar places such as Berlin’s Wannsee, Ahrenshoop near Hamburg, and Lake Tegernsee are featured, alongside international sites like Livorno, Monte Carlo, and Paris. In addition to landscapes, Bouet has explored still lifes and portraits, counting prominent public figures such as Wolfgang Schäuble, Joachim Gauck, and Hasso Plattner among his subjects.
While Bouet's motifs are rooted in figuration, his visual approach often borders on abstraction. His work resists easy categorisation within traditional genres, instead drawing connections to multiple artistic movements. His dissolution of contours and focus on capturing transient atmospheres evoke Impressionism, while the impulsive, expressive qualities of his paintings suggest affinities with Expressionism. This synthesis of styles underscores the complexity and versatility of his artistic vision.
Born in 1974, Christoph Bouet displayed extraordinary talent early in life, passing the preliminary aptitude test for the Burg Giebichenstein Academy of Art in Halle at just 14. He studied painting there from 1992 to 1999, earning his diploma. Since then, Bouet has worked successfully as a freelance artist, exhibiting his works regularly throughout Germany.

A one-of-a-kind or unique piece is a work of art that has been personally created by the artist. It exists only once due to the type of production (oil painting, watercolours, drawing, etc.).
In addition to the classic unique pieces, there exist the so-called "serial unique pieces". They present a series of works with the same colour, motif and technique, manually prepared by the same artist. The serial unique pieces are rooted in "serial art", a type of modern art, that aims to create an aesthetic effect through series, repetitions and variations of the same objects or themes or a system of constant and variable elements or principles.
In the history of arts, the starting point of this trend was the work "Les Meules" (1890/1891) by Claude Monet, in which for the first time a series was created that went beyond a mere group of works. The other artists, who addressed to the serial art, include Claude Monet, Piet Mondrian and above all Gerhard Richter.
