About Jochen Plogsties

The painter Jochen Plogsties studied under Friedemann Hahn at the Mainz Art Academy and under Arno Rink, a mentor of the New Leipzig School, at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig, Germany. He completed his studies there in 2008 as a master-class student of Neo Rauch.

The artist paints icons of art history, thereby challenging the viewer's visual habits. Through his approach to motifs and the associated questions of relevance, he delves into the realm of colour, creating a pure painting that can be experienced through the senses. The familiar encounters us anew, refreshes our perspective and asserts the necessity of an open perception.

Plogstie's works have been featured in major solo exhibitions at the Kestner Gesellschaft in Hanover (2014), the G2 Kunsthalle in Leipzig (2019, with Claudia Wieser) and the MEWO Kunsthalle in Memmingen (2021).

In 2009, he participated in the International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York City through a scholarship from the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony. In 2011, he received the renowned art prize of the Leipzig Volkszeitung.

The artist lives and works in Leipzig, with his studio located on the premises of the world-famous former cotton mill.
