About Elizabeth Peyton
The artist Elizabeth Peyton (*1965 in Danbury, Connecticut), who lives in New York and Berlin, has established a firm place for herself in the contemporary art scene with her intimate, often idealized portraits. She became known in the 1990s with small-format paintings of historical figures such as Napoleon and Ludwig II, which she presented in an exhibition at the Chelsea Hotel in New York in 1993.
Peyton's works are characterized by a delicate colour palette and an emotional depth that characterize her portraits of musicians, actors, artists and friends. Her best-known works include portraits of David Bowie, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kurt Cobain and members of the British royal family. She often uses photographs as models to capture the fleeting moments and inner world of her subjects.
Peyton gained international recognition with the retrospective “Live Forever”, which opened at the New Museum in New York in 2008 and was subsequently shown at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Whitechapel Gallery in London and the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht. Other important solo exhibitions have taken place at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin and the Deichtorhallen in Hamburg, among others.
Peyton's works also fetch high prices on the art market. Her previous auction record is USD 2,470,000 for the painting “Nick with His Eyes Shut”, which was auctioned at Sotheby's in New York in 2022. Other works such as “Ben (Villa d'Este)” and “Prince Harry, September 1998” also achieved six-figure sums.
Elizabeth Peyton now lives and works in New York and Berlin. With her unique approach to portraiture, she has reinvigorated figurative painting and is considered one of the most influential artists of her generation.
