About Armin Mueller-Stahl
He is one of the few German global stars, character actors and Hollywood stars. Armin Mueller-Stahl, born in December 1930 in Tilsit, East Prussia, is a multi-talented artist with diverse creative powers. In the past, only insiders knew about his great talent as a painter. Armin Mueller-Stahl paints as he acts: magnificently!
Armin Mueller-Stahl's portraits are expressive images of people. With partly expressive brushstrokes, reduced to essential features and abstracted, he gives each character a pictorial existence. In landscape painting, Armin Mueller-Stahl takes abstraction even further. He concentrates on constellations of light and colours, which he interprets in a very virtuoso manner. This reveals the trained eye of a meticulous observer who has approached his environment with curiosity and a fundamental sympathy for decades.
Armin Mueller-Stahl is one of the multi-talented artists in German cultural history, alongside Hermann Hesse, Ernst Barlach, Günter Grass and Oskar Kokoschka. A trained concert violinist, he is today considered perhaps the most important living German actor. But Armin Mueller-Stahl is also known to expert audiences as a painter, graphic artist, sculptor and writer. Versatility is his philosophy of life: "For me, painting, writing, making music and acting simply belong together."
At the age of seventy, he made one of his most spectacular appearances: at the Babelsberg Film Museum, he appeared publicly as a painter for the first time with 100 works. "All my life I have observed and conveyed attitudes, I act them out and draw them" – for half a century! And so the exhibitions in Potsdam and Schwerin brought to light astonishing portrayals of people and many biographical snapshots from the film and theatre scene.
Today, at over 90 years of age, his artistic work, be it his drawings, his oil and acrylic paintings or his watercolours, is widely recognised (and, it should be noted, without any "celebrity bonus", given the numerous amateur painters among his fellow actors).
Graphic artwork in the making of which the artist combines at least two graphic production techniques.
A one-of-a-kind or unique piece is a work of art personally created by the artist. It exists only once due to the type of production (oil painting, watercolour, drawing, lost-wax sculpture etc.).
In addition to the classic unique pieces, there are also the so-called "serial unique pieces". They present a series of works with the same colour, motif and technique, manually prepared by the same artist. The serial unique pieces are rooted in "serial art", a genre of modern art that aims to create an aesthetic effect through series, repetitions, and variations of the same objects or themes or a system of constant and variable elements or principles.
The historical starting point is considered to be Claude Monet's "Les Meules" (1890/1891), where, for the first time, a series was created that went beyond a mere group of works. The other artists, who addressed to the serial art, include Claude Monet, Piet Mondrian and above all Gerhard Richter.
