Masterpieces of Classical Modernism
Cubism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Symbolism, Constructivism, Futurism, Suprematism, Bauhaus, Dada, New Objectivity, Blauer Reiter and the Fauves are styles and artist groups of the 20th century, all of which are collectively referred to as "Classical Modernism".
From 1900 onwards, artists of different nationalities developed independently of each other, moving away from representational painting, and questioning the traditional understanding of art in order to fathom a new truth behind things.
Until the outbreak of World War II, Paris was an important centre of the avant-garde. There, the move away from academic painting had already begun in the 19th century, first with Realism and later with Impressionism.
