About Niki de Saint Phalle
1930-2002
The French artist Niki de Saint-Phalle suddenly became famous with her "Shooting Paintings": paintings on which she had attached bags of paint beneath a layer of plaster. After a shot was fired from a rifle, the paint flowed freely across the surface of the painting. These paintings called the abstract stain painting of the post-war period into question, since anyone, whether an artist or not, could create such works by firing a rifle. Niki de Saint Phalle became a member of the artists' group "Nouveau Réalisme", which sought to integrate objects from everyday reality into art. The group also included Daniel Spoerri and Jean Tinguely, who later became Niki de Saint Phalle's husband.
Her "Nanas" are famous, figures made of polyester and plaster, sensuous female forms in bright pop colours that radiate physical warmth and innocent charm. Niki de Saint Phalle called them "Harbingers of a new matriarchal age". "I will make the largest sculptures of my generation. Larger. Taller and stronger than those made by men." Today, her Nanas populate many squares and museums around the world. Many works were created together with Jean Tinguely, including the enormous Nana "She" for the museum in Stockholm, which could be entered and whose arms and legs provided space for a milk bar, a gallery and a cinema.
One of the highlights of Niki de Saint Phalle's work is the Tarot Garden, begun in 1979. In the tarot, Niki de Saint Phalle formulated symbols for complex situations in life and social realities: "If life is a game of cards, then we were born without knowing the rules of the game. And yet we have to play. ... I am convinced that these cards contain an important message… I owe to the tarot a better understanding of the spiritual world and the problems in life - as well as the insight that every difficulty must be resolved so that new obstacles can be tackled, and ultimately inner unity and the Gardens of Paradise can be reached."
