About Norbert Bisky
Dreams and nightmares captured on canvas
“On the international art market, his bad boys in oil are snatched out of the painter's hand, in Germany he is met with more restraint and criticism,” wrote Focus magazine in 2007 about Norbert Bisky. Bisky became internationally renowned for his paintings of blond, athletic youths, whose harmonious manner of depiction contrasts with the pictorial action, and is considered one of the most influential painters of the new figuration. Initially, however, his works were often misinterpreted. The New York Museum of Modern Art collects Bisky's works, as do the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Korean National Museum in Seoul. Anyone interested in buying Norbert Bisky's work will find it a fascinating exploration of beauty and transience.
Bisky (*1970), who grew up in the GDR, was influenced by the flood of images of socialism and was encouraged by Georg Baselitz, whose student and master student he was, to engage with the images of his childhood. Other influences include the Spanish masters Francisco de Goya, Francisco de Zurbarán and Jusepe de Ribera, whom he studied intensively during his time in Spain at the Prado in Madrid. Their impact on Bisky's art is particularly visible in the works that the artist has painted since 2010 during his “black phase”. Anyone wishing to buy a Norbert Bisky painting will discover a new, deeper dimension to his art in these works.
Through personal experiences of death and terror, the content of the paintings and their depiction converge, so that the colorful, radiant tonality of his works gives way to a black palette. Art collectors who want to buy a Norbert Bisky print will also find an expressive visual language in his works that oscillates between beauty and menace.Bisky's artistic work now goes beyond painting, and he is increasingly integrating his painterly works into elaborate, site-specific installations. In 2013, Bisky designed the stage set for a production of the Staatsballett Berlin. From 2008 to 2010, he was a visiting professor at the Geneva Academy of Art. In 2015, Norbert Bisky swapped his Berlin studio for three months with the Israeli artist Erez Israeli to gather inspiring new impressions and make a personal contribution to the show “Twilight over Berlin”, which honored the establishment of diplomatic relations between Israel and Germany 50 years ago. Anyone looking to buy a Norbert Bisky painting will find works in his multifaceted oeuvre that impressively reflect the spirit of the times.
The artist lives and works in Berlin.
