About Otto Piene
Otto Piene was an important pioneer of international light art. Born on March 18, 1928 in Laasphe, he studied art at the academies in Munich and Düsseldorf. In 1957, together with Heinz Mack, he founded the influential artist group ZERO, which Günther Uecker later joined.
Piene experimented early on with immaterial pictorial means such as light, shadow, air and fire - media that made his artistic signature unique. He himself described his so-called fire paintings as “survival studies, formed from private purgatory”. In these works, he unites opposites such as matter and energy, reality and imagination.
The creative process itself - painting with fire - was as intense for Piene as the work itself: Car paint was applied in thick layers, then ignited and deformed by heat. The resulting traces of soot and bubbles lend the works a dramatic surface that makes each painting unique. For collectors and art lovers looking for something special, it is worth considering buying Otto Piene in order to own a piece of this expressive power permanently.
A recurring motif in Piene's work is the rainbow - a symbol of the connection between man, nature and technology. His projection of a huge rainbow into the night sky at the closing ceremony of the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich became famous - a milestone in multimedia art.
Piene's interdisciplinary approach, his close collaboration with technicians and scientists, opened up new dimensions for art - and inspired subsequent generations of artists, including Olafur Eliasson. Today, his works are represented in over 200 museums and public collections worldwide. International awards such as the “Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts” from the World Cultural Council underline his importance.
Until his death in 2014, Otto Piene lived and worked in Düsseldorf, Cambridge and Groton (Massachusetts). Anyone who acquires a work by him not only preserves an object, but also a piece of art history. If you are thinking about buying Otto Piene paintings, you are making a decision for visionary art that connects the past, present and future.
