About Werner Berges
1941-2017, painter, graphic artist and sculptor
Werner Berges became one of the icons of "German Pop" in the 1960s and was the only one who, like his American colleagues Tom Wesselmann and Mel Ramos, represented Pop Art up to the present day.
As early as 1972, he exhibited Pop Art at the documenta 5 in Kassel, Germany. In 1973, he published a colour etching titled "Blondi": a portrait of a girl from an advertisement which Berges transformed into a wonderful Pop Art work using graphic stripes, halftone dots and bright, clear primary colours. The motif was sold after a few days and is now a sought-after art object.
Werner Berges' works send out signals of "easy-living", combined with a touch of eroticism. It is an optimistic art that is understood, loved and collected worldwide. In his paintings, Berges alienated the faces and bodies of anonymous and beautiful women. He achieves compositions of great formal and colourful beauty with abstract elements, which he inserted into the picture while leaving entire surfaces free.
Berges was the winner of several national and international awards, his works were exhibited in hundreds of solo and group exhibitions, most recently at the large "German Pop" exhibition in 2014 at the Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt.
