Detailed description
Picture "Untitled (Sailing Boat on River)" (1925) (Unique piece)
Pencil drawings play an important role in Lyonel Feininger's oeuvre. His so-called "Nature Notes" often served as models for paintings that he sometimes produced months or years later in his studio. Especially after he had to leave Germany for America in 1937, the atmospheric drawings helped him to remember the motifs of his former homeland and continue to capture them on his canvases.
The scenes on paper, captured with a confident line and great speed, are not intended to be true-to-nature depictions, but rather intellectual ideal or longing images that the artist sees before his inner eye and makes tangible for the viewer.
This drawing shows one of Feininger's favourite motifs. The artist was fascinated by the sea and above all by sailing boats. He not only drew, watercoloured and painted them, but also built elaborate models - often with the help of his sons.
Pencil on paper, 1925. Dated. The work is registered in the Feininger Archive - The Lyonel Feininger Project LLC, New York. Motif size/sheet size 14 x 22 cm. Size in frame 31 x 39 cm as shown.

About Lyonel Feininger
Feininger was born in New York in 1871, the son of German musicians. At the age of 16, he came to Germany on a concert tour with his parents - a turning point that had a lasting impact on his life and work. He decided to stay and study at the Hamburg School of Arts and Crafts and later at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin. A subsequent period of study in Paris deepened his artistic influences.
Back in Germany, Feininger developed into a central figure of modernism. He was close to the artists' group “Der Blaue Reiter” and was appointed by Walter Gropius as master of the graphic workshops at the Bauhaus in 1919. There, in Weimar, Dessau and Berlin, he had a decisive influence on the visual appearance of the school. Alongside Oskar Schlemmer, it was Feininger in particular who consistently implemented the Bauhaus' ideal of order in his art. Unlike many of his contemporaries, his focus was not on the human figure but on architecture - particularly Gothic church buildings, whose clear structures and lighting inspired him to create his characteristic style.
The architecture of small German towns became the starting point for his studies, from which an unmistakable, light-flooded style emerged. It is precisely these works that make his paintings so appealing - for collectors who want to buy Lyonel Feininger paintings, they open up access to a world of light, form and spirituality.
During the National Socialist era, Feininger's works were defamed as “degenerate art”. He therefore returned to his native New York in 1937. There he devoted himself with renewed intensity to the depiction of urban architecture and created impressive impressions of the Manhattan skyline. Anyone looking to buy Feininger today will find fascinating evidence of his engagement with the modern city in these late works.
Whether you are a collector or a lover of classic modern art - anyone who wants to buy a work by Lyonel Feininger is making a choice for artistic clarity, intellectual depth and lasting aesthetic value.

A one-of-a-kind or unique piece is a work of art personally created by the artist. It exists only once due to the type of production (oil painting, watercolour, drawing, lost-wax sculpture etc.).
In addition to the classic unique pieces, there are also the so-called "serial unique pieces". They present a series of works with the same colour, motif and technique, manually prepared by the same artist. The serial unique pieces are rooted in "serial art", a genre of modern art that aims to create an aesthetic effect through series, repetitions, and variations of the same objects or themes or a system of constant and variable elements or principles.
The historical starting point is considered to be Claude Monet's "Les Meules" (1890/1891), where, for the first time, a series was created that went beyond a mere group of works. The other artists, who addressed to the serial art, include Claude Monet, Piet Mondrian and above all Gerhard Richter.
