Sea and Seafaring

Ships and the sea have been represented in art almost since the beginning of time. In fact, the first recorded works are petroglyphs dating back to 12000 BC.

But it was not until the end of the Middle Ages that maritime art began to develop as a genre on its own.

Artists who dealt intensively with the sea and its pictorial representation include Lyonel Feininger, Max Pechstein, Caspar David Friedrich, Claude Monet, and James Turner.
