Masakazu Kondo

Masakazu Kondo (born 1980 in Osaka, Japan) was a master student of Prof. Katharina Fritsch at the Kunstakademie Münster and Düsseldorf.

Kondo's large-format drawings show every last detail. In a perfection reminiscent of classical traditions, his pictures show animals, rarely plants, against an undefined background.

Kondo on his work: "Drawing is not a copy of reality. In my work, I focus on translating the view of the object to be painted into a drawing. My interest lies in the precise gaze. I have studied this with a wide variety of other artists. I have learned a lot from Cezanne, Velasques and Hokusai (Japanese woodcarver), for example. It's primarily about the visual language, the motif takes a back seat."

Masakazu Kondo lives and works in Osaka.
