Bernd Zimmer "Crystal World"

15.09. – 20.11.2021

Bernd Zimmer (born in 1948 in Planegg near Munich) transports us into a new reality with his paintings, which he creates using broad brushstrokes and vibrant, merging colours.

Zimmer finds his inspiration, for example, in nature, the cosmos or biblical content, yet he doesn't have specific references like photos during the painting process: "All of my pictures are invented situations. They are experiences expressed through painting." In the late 1970s, Zimmer, along with colleagues Rainer Fetting and Helmut Middendorf, formed the group known as the "Junge Wilde". Today, he is one of the most important contemporary German artists and enjoys international success with his works.

The exhibition "Crystal World" presents works from the past 10 years that reflect the artist's experiences in the thematic fields of "Reflection," "Crystal World," and "Everything Flows," serving as an ode to the element of water in all its states and its preciousness.

In times when nature conservation has fortunately returned to the focus due to the looming climate change, Bernd Zimmer's paintings touch viewers in a particularly emotional way. They pay homage to the beauty and grandeur of nature, conveying a special appreciation.

Various travels, including those to Asia and South America, have significantly influenced Bernd Zimmer's creative process and worldview. At the centre of his paintings is the subject of nature in all its forms and moods.

The artist's collected impressions from travels, nature, philosophy, and literature find their resonance in Zimmer's colour-intensive works. His oeuvre encompasses painting, works on paper, as well as woodcuts, and is represented in numerous national and international collections and exhibitions.

The artist's vision of a cross-cultural body of work amidst unique nature was realised with the opening of the STOA169 columned hall, which opened in 2020. Each of the columns was designed by internationally renowned contemporary artists, including Karin Kneffel, Sean Scully, Katharina Sieverding, Erwin Wurm, Laurence Weiner, and Brigitte Kowanz.

In the gallery, we are simultaneously presenting works from the series "1000 Mountains" by Felix Rehfeld.

Cabinet: "1000 Mountains" by Felix Rehfeld

In our gallery, we are concurrently showcasing works from the series "1000 Mountains" by Felix Rehfeld.

Felix Rehfeld (born in 1981) studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and was a master-class student of one of the most famous contemporary German artists, Karin Kneffel, whom he supported as an assistant after his graduation.

The small-format paintings are part of the comprehensive series "1000 Mountains," created by the artist in 2017/2018. The series represents a painterly discourse on the representation of moods, lighting conditions, and the poetic beauty of mountain landscapes, without providing a purely naturalistic depiction of nature. The impasto paintings lend themselves to both singular accentuation and serial, multi-part hanging.
