Helge Leiberg receives Brandenburg Art Prize
This year, Helge Leiberg will receive the honorary prize of the Brandenburg Minister President for his life's work as part of the Brandenburg Art Prize, which is awarded by the Märkische Oderzeitung and the Stiftung Schloss Neuhardenberg.
Painting inspired by music
Helge Leiberg's world of paintings and sculptures consists of emblematic figures, slender, with overlong limbs and expansive gestures. Their dancing gestures reveal pure life: sometimes oblivious, sometimes interacting, they express affection and aversion, struggle and union. His masterful lines and virtuoso depiction of movement characterize his work. Leiberg draws inspiration from the mutual influence of painting, dance and music.
International success
During his time in Dresden - in the 1970s - Leiberg worked with Cornelia Schleime or A. R. Penck, among others. In 1984 he left the GDR for West Berlin, due to the ever-increasing pressure from the Stasi. And here, too, he quickly found new access and a large audience. With the joint exhibition "Malstrom" at the Haus am Waldsee in Berlin in 1986, he achieved his breakthrough internationally as well. His works were even shown in Beijing.
