Genre Scenes

In the visual arts, the term genre scenes refers to paintings depicting situations and scenes of daily life. Subjects usually include interiors, meals, feasts, tavern or peasant scenes, markets, and other street scenes.

The main characteristic of a genre painting is that the scenery is depicted in a non-idealised way, in contrast to the traditional, classical approach of infusing scenes with dramaturgical and heroic elements.
