About Robert Longo

Robert Longo is known for his photo-realistic charcoal drawings. His motifs show the beauty and the horror of the world, breaking waves, explosions, ripped open shark's mouths.

Longo was born in 1953 and studied under the sculptor Leonda Finke, then briefly at the Academy of Art in Florence, and finally at Buffalo State College, New York. He explored various media early on. Drawing, painting, installations, performances, video art and photography – his artistic range has not yet reached its limits.

He has worked with famous personalities such as Keanu Reeves, Dolph Lundgren and Takeshi Kitano, and has also produced music videos for the bands New Order and R.E.M.

In 2005, Robert Longo received the Goslar Kaiserring, one of the world's most important prizes for modern art. He is exhibited worldwide and participated in the documenta as well as the Venice Biennale. His works are represented in the collection of the Guggenheim Museum and the MOMA, New York, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, the Centre Pompidou, Paris, the Albertina, Vienna and the Tate Gallery, London, among others.
